You Can't Find Your Own Path on Someone Else's Map

You Can't Find Your Own Path on Someone Else's Map

As graduation approaches, I've been meeting many young returnees. They studied jewelry, design, marketing, brand management — impressive resumes, strong language skills, broad global perspectives. But there's a sharp problem: after coming back, they seem to have forgotten how to work in this market. Years abroad taught them Western culture, aesthetics, and logic. They came ready to make their mark — and found the industry had already changed. Over the past two years, Chinese aesthetics have risen fast, local brands have grown, and our own cultural logic is being rebuilt. The Western frameworks they studied don't quite fit the local terrain. Many feel anxious — convinced they've fallen behind. But you didn't learn the wrong things. You're just carrying someone else's map, trying to find your own road. To know others is wisdom. To know yourself is clarity. Understanding the world is intelligence — reading your own ground and knowing your own culture is depth. You've seen the world, but you may have overlooked the soil beneath your feet. What you've learned isn't wasted. It needs translation — a cultural translation that weaves your global knowledge into your own native fabric. What once felt like foreign theory becomes the sharpest tool in your hands. Going out was never about following others — it was about coming home better equipped. Your roots are here. And so is your future.
