Risks Of Repolishing Aged Turquoise Beads

Many collectors want to re‑polish aged turquoise beads for better appearance, yet this practice carries considerable risks. Long‑term wear builds exquisite surface patina, which will be completely removed during grinding, reverting the bead back to rough‑stone status. Repolishing causes heavy material loss. An 8‑millimeter aged bead may shrink to just over 6 millimeters. Both weight and the cultural value accumulated over years will be lost. Beads with iron lines or hidden cracks may crack under grinding vibration. Intact aged beads are not recommended for rework. Only heavily flawed beads unwearable in original form should be re‑processed after full consideration. Do not chase perfect looks at the cost of time‑honored collectibles.
