It Absorbs Oils and Deepens with Wear — but Whitens in Dry Conditions

The biggest difference between turquoise and jadeite or hetian jade is its internal water content — which is why it's called a "living jade." This moisture gives turquoise its absorbent quality, letting it take in oils and sweat over time, becoming warmer and deeper in color. But lower‑density stones left unused or exposed to dry air can lose that moisture and develop a dull, white haze. Many players worry they've bought fakes — but this is simply a physical response. Once you understand this trait, you can make sense of both patina and whitening.
