Jin Shengtan Left Behind Two Words Before His Execution — “Good” and “Pain.” He Never Bent His Spirit.

Jin Shengtan Left Behind Two Words Before His Execution — “Good” and “Pain.” He Never Bent His Spirit.

Late Ming scholar Jin Shengtan was sentenced for his involvement in the “weeping temple” case. Before execution, he joked with the executioner and entrusted a banknote. After his head fell, two slips of paper dropped from his ear — they read only “good” and “pain.” He had spent his life annotating classics and holding to his principles. Even wronged, he never lost his clarity or bent to power. His story reminds us: injustice and hardship may come. Outside honors and humiliations are passing clouds. Holding to an open heart and an independent spirit — that is what keeps you grounded when all else falls away.
